SMC : Stripes!

no shopping challenge

My “No Shopping Challenge” is still in full effect and let me tell you, this is no cake walk.  I know how pathetic I sound and I agree… it is pathetic, but it’s hard to break a habit…especially one that served as a distraction from real life. Gah! (more on that later!)

Anyways, despite the CHALLENGE portion of this project, I have most certainly been reaping the benefits of this added discipline.  Hello, paying off a credit card! Woot Woot!  Also, it has really forced me to be creative with what I already own and I am loving the results!

Shop My Closet

This edition of “Shop My Closet” is focused on another myth that I’ve heard my whole life AND whole-heartedly reject!  If you’re larger than a size zero (and most definitely if you are plus-sized) I’m sure you’ve been told…

“You can’t wear stripes!”

Maybe it was said a bit sweeter “Oh bless your heart, you think you can wear stripes”, but however it was said, I’m here to tell you it’s not true!

You can rock stripes regardless of size, it’s just a matter of how you do it!  Here are a few fun ways that my friend Ella of Start Close In Styling and I reinvented the stripes I already had in my closet.

Here’s what we did –

b&w striped cardigan + coral polka dotted top + long maxi skirt + black belt + top knot + massive earrings =  a little look I like to call “crazy middle school art teacher”.  Totally eclectic and full of personality.  The diagonal stripes coupled with the belt cinched at the waist create flattering lines.

b&w striped dress + bright top + floral scarf + classic flats + thin black belt = perfect weekend brunch outfit.  The actual fit of the dress matters a lot more than the pattern and the contrast of the bright top is a fun twist.

structured khaki jacket + khaki&black vertical striped shirt + k&b horizontal striped skirt + leopard print pumps = monochromatic striped outfit totally appropriate for work. Despite the multiple prints mixed in this outfit, the fact that we kept the color scheme monochromatic/neutral makes this a great work option.  Add a few black & gold accessories and you are good to go!

floral top + k&b horizontal striped skirt + cute flats = a simple & no fuss outfit that’s totally feminine with a touch of edge.  Ella is teaching me not to be afraid of mixing multiple patterned pieces and a floral + stripe is a perfect example of that.

gray&black thin striped blazer + b&w thick striped t-shirt + chambray shirt + red pants + statement necklace + sparkly shoes + a red lip = my take on preppy. Stripes on stripes? The mind reels!  Who knew it could be this fun? I love the classic color pattern but of course I can’t do it without adding a bit of sparkle.

b&w striped cropped jacket + neon pink top + statement necklace + black skinny jeans + black heels = a fun weekend or party option! I still love the neon trend and thankfully it’s not going anywhere too soon.  Pink always makes me happy and it’s a fun pop against b&w.

Of course, stripes can be a tricky thing to incorporate into your wardrobe, but I really believe that anyone can rock them.  Never say never!  Just try until you find a way that works for you.  Ultimately, it’s really about the confidence that you wear them with.  If you feel good, you will look good.  So wear what you love! It’s really as simple as that.

Don’t forget!

I love your flower shirt! I think I may have the same one (Forever 21?) with a studded collar. Unfortunately, it’s still in the closet with the tags sadly dangling off of it. I knew I loved it but couldn’t pick what to wear it with! Thanks for the idea 🙂

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! I actually got my shirt at Target, but I have seen something similar at Forever 21. So fun! Glad you were inspired to take it out of your closet. Just checked out your site. So awesome what you are doing! You’ll have to keep me posted on how it goes! Good Luck! XOXO
