Having girlfriends is the best.thing.ever. Someone with whom you can swap stories, giggle and share life’s wonderful moments. There’s so much wisdom that I have gained from the amazing women in my life; whether about the best product to get rid of dreaded frizz or advice on how to live my life with passion. My life is better because of the girlfriends in it.
Undoubtedly, we are better together!
I’m starting “Girl Talk” because I want to share the amazingness that I am blessed with. Today, Ashlynn will be talking about how to rock glasses and embracing your inner geek.
Ashlynn: Hi, I’m Ashlynn! I have wore glasses from the age of 3 to the age of thirteen – really terrible coke bottle glasses. I, thankfully, was able to get contacts in 8th grade. I swore I would never wear glasses again. However, I have recently become intrigued with the tortoise-rimmed hipster glasses trend. That and my eye doctor has been nagging me to get a pair of specs to use to rest my eyes from contact wear. I’ve been researching different types of glasses and I’ve found myself particularly drawn to the hipster eyewear trend. I want my girlfriends’ opinion on whether or not I can pull off this look.
(Ok…can we just take a moment to appreciate the TOTAL CUTENESS of a little Ashlynn? OMG! So cute)
LAH: I’m pretty sure you could rock just about any look, but I totally understand wanting to get a girlfriend’s opinion on such a big look change. Other than the giving your eyes a rest, what is it about trying a new look with glasses that appeals to you?
Ashlynn: Well, I’ve always really liked glasses on men. It seems to add a level of sophistication and intelligence that I find very, very attractive. Glasses are accessories – you can never have too many accessories. It’s like jewelry for your face!
I think I’m looking for a marriage between hipster and preppy with a dash of sexy librarian. But I don’t want to look like I’m trying to hard or like I’m trying to force a trend.
LAH: Ohh I love that look! I remember when I first started wearing glasses. I was excited about the idea of having a new accessories but completely overwhelmed at what felt like a new responsibility. Have you always loved wearing glasses?
Ashlynn: NO. I started wearing glasses in pre-school, long before most kids had to wear glasses. I wore them all through elementary and middle school, which of course made me super popular (no it didn’t.) I was soooooo relieved when I was allowed to get contacts in 8th grade.
LAH: Do you think that has made you more reticent to try out glasses as an adult?
Ashlynn: I’d really never considered wearing glasses ever, EVER again. Why would I go back? But I really like glasses on other people and so it got me thinking that maybe I should give them a second chance.
LAH: I love glasses! They are totally another fun way to accessorize and bring our your personality. I’m also a firm believer in never saying never when it comes to fashion. My motto is you never know until you try. Don’t assume something will look bad until you try it. That’s why I love this company called Warby Parker. They have the cutest glasses and you can try on up to 5 pairs at a time for free. You tried them for the first time this week, right? How was your Warby Parker experience and what are the options you’re considering?
Ashlynn: I first heard about Warby Parker from a friend and then read an impressive article about their founders Neil Blumenthal and David Gilboa in the Innovation of Design issue of Fast Company – as a lover of great design and all things beautiful reading about the company’s behind the scenes creative process pushed me over the edge into trying their specs. Their website is gorgeous and incredibly simple to use (which is a plus for me because I am not super tech-savvy.) It did take a little while to decide which 5 frames I wanted because there were so many to choose from. But like Rachel Zoe, I like options. The process was simple and easy and in a few days my 5 frames were delivered to my door in a sleek black case and sweet (well designed) note. There was a small delivery snafu (UPS’ fault, not theirs) but their customer service is exceptional (hi Nicole!) They followed up with me the next day to make sure I received my frames and even offered to help me make my final decision. So sweet! Seriously, the BEST experience.
Here’s what I tried :
Name : Preston
What I loved: The tortoise-shell rims, the square fit.
What I loved: Similar to the Preston but a bit bigger. I think I can handle bigger frames since my face is pretty round.
Name : Bensen
What I loved: These frames are a little darker and smaller – a bit more hipster and a little less preppy.
Name : Ainsworth
What I loved: Also similar to the Preston, but the frames are slimmer and sit a bit wider on my face.
Name : Ballard
What I loved: Really love the color: Chestnut. These might be a bit wide for my face.
LAH – I love all of these fun options! This is not an easy decision… which is why we wanted to put it out to YOU the reader. Take a second and let us know which one is your favorite! We’ll give you an update next week on her final decision!
p.s. I also LOVE that Warby Parker is all about giving back. For every pair of glasses that they sell, Warby Parker provides a pair to someone in need. You can read more about what they do here. So cool!
