Bieber Fever

I’m still in the midst of birthday weekend madness…. I’ve got to tell you, so far I am LOVING my thirties!  Part of the reason might be this little tidbit  from my birthday party yesterday! Click on the link for all kinds of birthday fun (Bieber Boy Band )

I’ll be back to share lots more pictures but for now… Enjoy!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I love Valentine’s Day!  Any holiday that decks itself out in PINK, hearts and glitter is a-ok with me.  It also helps that it’s the same week as my birthday!  I was due on Valentine’s Day but in keeping with my personality… I was 3 days late.

This year is no different.  I’ve already had my share of chocolate and have rubbed glitter in my eyes on more than one occasion.  It’s shaping up to be a great day.

On top of that the Washington Post has released an article that is sure to help my game.  They had their brilliant DC readers submit their own one-liners and I’ve been rolling on the floor this morning reading them.

I live in a nerdy city.  I realize that.

Seriously… that’s how much… because it’s way far you know….

and my personal favorite…

Thanks to the Washington Post, I now have enough pick up lines for all of 2012 and potentially beyond.  Thanks for looking out WP!

What’s your favorite pick up line? Go ahead and try it out today ;-)

Math is Fun! (and other things we tell kids)

I’ve heard MATH described as Mental Abuse To Humans… and generally, I agree. Definitely not my favorite subject in school.  I would have much rather told you the history of the trains that left the station traveling 30mph than actually calculating which would arrive first.  Who can concentrate on those details when you’re on a train… weeee!!!!!!!!!!!

All of my teachers’ work was not in vain though, I do remember some basic principles.

Namely that if A = B and B= C  then…..wait for it…. A=C

Seriously… I think I just used my allotment of brain cells for the day.

I recently heard someone explain something in the Bible with the same reasoning and like the equation above, it stuck with me.

1 John 4 makes this simple statement “God is Love“.

Awww so nice… didn’t you just start to feel warm and fuzzy??? (Photo Credit)

We often leave it at that and never dig deeper to uncover what that really means.  Let’s take it a step further … if God is Love… what is the definition of LOVE?

1 Corinthians 13 (yes, we’ve all heard it if we’ve ever attended a wedding in our lifetimes) says…

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. “

Now if A= C, like we deduced above, then… let’s try something crazy…

GOD = LOVE

GOD is patient, GOD is kind.  HE does not envy,  HE does not boast,  HE is not proud.  GOD does not dishonor others,  HE is not self-seeking,  HE is not easily angered, GOD keeps no record of wrongs.  GOD does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  GOD  always protects, GOD always trusts, GOD always hopes, GOD always perseveres.

GOD never fails.

Whatever you’ve thought about God in the past… the above is truth.  1 Corinthians 13 is no longer some long list of unattainable attributes for us to try to work for, instead it’s God’s promise to each of us.  It’s who He is and wants to be in our lives. Whatever you’re facing… He is the answer.  He will always protect you… He believes the best about YOU…. He never fails.

Quite a paradigm shift…huh? Maybe this math stuff isn’t so bad after all.

Case of the Mondays…

It’s Monday…. have I mentioned how much I loooooooooovvvveee Mondays? No??  Yeah, there’s a reason for that.  They’re not my favorite.  Especially not when the Patriots lost….

It doesn’t look like Brady likes Mondays either.  (Photo Credit)

This is why I don’t watch football.  I start to care too much and I can’t handle the losses… yesterday was rough.

Anyways, here I am… its Monday again… and I’m less than thrilled.   I wish this wasn’t such a common occurrence… but I’m working on it.  One of the ways I try to fight that familiar “Monday, Monday” feeling is something I learned from a book that I read as part of my “read 10 books” goal in my list.

The 4:8 Principle is a short read that centers around Philippians 4:8 which says,

“Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.”

The book talks about being intentional with what you think about.  One of the things that it mentions is that we often intentionally think through the worst-case scenarios of things.  We call it being prepared, but at its core, it’s worry and it’s setting negative thought patterns that eventually turn into actions in our lives.  The author, Tommy Newberry, encourages us to take the same amount of time to intentionally thing about the best-case scenarios.  Imagine things going well.

One of the exercises in the book is to answer the following questions.   I’ve included them on my calendar as a recurring event each Monday and I have to say, they do help.

1. What are 5 things I am thankful for right now?

2. What are 5 of my strengths or positive traits?

3. What are 5 of my best achievements so far?

4. Who are the 5 people that love me the most?

5. What 5 things am I looking forward to in the next 7 days?

Feel free to leave your responses in the comments.  This is going to be a great week! (whether I currently feel that way or not)
